Our Vision:

At Avalon Church of Christ, we envision Jesus transforming us and the world through us every day. We will invite God’s daily transformation by fostering spiritual disciplines, developing holistic fellowship with one another, and practicing evangelistic hospitality with others.

We envision celebrating corporate spiritual disciplines of Bible study, prayer, giving, serving and worship in an ever increasing community of believers each Sunday. We will make full use of communication technology to expand our reach beyond the limitation of our current physical campus.

We envision fostering the regular practice of spiritual disciplines within our homes by providing classes and workshops designed to equip members for Bible study, prayer, service, personal/family worship and evangelism.

We envision becoming a family of families modeling biblical community and holistic fellowship through regular small group meetings held throughout Tidewater. Members of each group will be able to describe their group as a safe place where we accept and are accepted, love and are loved, shepherd and are shepherded, encourage and are encouraged, forgive and are forgiven, serve and are served.

We envision reaching Tidewater for Christ by practicing evangelistic hospitality in our homes and church buildings. Every member will be a minister to their sphere of influence and the church will organically grow as a result.

We envision reaching the world for Christ by recruiting, training, and sending out many of our members as missionaries, church planters, and church workers all over the world. We will have a surplus of people equipped from within Avalon to fill vocational and voluntary ministry roles as they become available.

Our Beliefs

God is the Creator of the universe.  He has eternally existed in three personalities:  the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  These three are coequal and are one God.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man.  He accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead.  The Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God the Father where, as ou High Priest, He fulfills the ministry as Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate. Jesus is coming again to judge the living and the dead.

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make everyone aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every believer from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under His control daily.

The Bible is God's Word to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the ultimate source of truth for Christian beliefs and living.

Salvation is God's gift to you if you'll accept it. We can never make up for our sin with self-improvement or good works. It is only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness that you can be saved from sin's penalty. That every person is special and important to God but that all have sinned and drifted away from God (Romans 3:23).  We trust that those expressing faith in Christ should repent of personal sin, confess Christ as Lord, be immersed in baptism (Acts 2:38), and remain faithful (Revelation 2:10).

You were created to exist forever. We believe that forever is spent in one of two places: eternally separated from God because of sin or in union with God because of His forgiveness and salvation. When you die, you will either spend eternity in heaven or hell. Eternal separation from God happens in hell. Eternal union with God occurs in heaven.
